BMI Calculator
The measurement of excess weight is a science unto itself.
Scientists usually measure various aspects of body weight (bones, muscles, water, fat etc) separately, and isolate fat as the least desirable aspect.
However, for general-purpose measurements, the BMI (Body Mass Index) Calculator is a very good tool, too.
Adult men and women, who have passed the peak of their body development, can use the BMI Calculator to get an estimate of whether they are underweight, normal or overweight.
It should be noted that for children and teenagers, whose body is still growing, the BMI calculation is done in a different way.
A BMI calculation is based on body height in order to determine the proper weight for a certain body type. Sometimes it can show misleading results especially if someone has excess muscle weight instead of excess fat weight.
This is because extra muscle weight may be useful for an athlete and it is certainly not as harmful as extra fat weight. In most cases this is the difference between an overweight person and an obese one.
In general, a low BM Index means that a person needs to gain some weight, and a high BMI means that a person has excess weight. A very high BM Index may indicate significant health problems. The higher the BMI, the more likely it is for people to have increased cardiovascular problems and debilitating diseases like diabetes.
Let’s see the BMI categories:
BMI < 18
People with BMI lower than 18 are considered to be from mildly to significantly underweight. A very low BMI could mean various psychological or physiological problems that lead to eating disorders, reduced appetite, increased metabolism, lack of adequate nutrition, and many more.
BMI = 19 to 24
People on this part of the spectrum have a body mass which is ideal for their body type and are considered as “normal.” However, those on the borders to the lower and higher measurements should be careful in order not to slip into becoming underweight or overweight.
BMI = 25 to 29
From 25 upwards, people are slipping into the overweight territory with a corresponding increase in the health risks associated with how high their BMI is. Fortunately, if you are closer to the previous category, you can lose this extra weight quite easily. But this depends on the age, too. Sometimes age and reduced activity makes it harder to lose weight and easier to gain weight.
BMI = 30 to 39
In this category are those people who are considered significantly overweight and could be experiencing various health problems due to their high BMI. Needless to say, that if you belong to this category, you must act on this and start losing weight as soon as possible.
BMI >40
This is dangerous ground as pathological obesity is a very serious problem. People who belong to this category must seek medical help immediately, since their life may be in danger from being so overweight.
