Chitosan Diet Pills

Chitosan is the generic name of a natural polysaccharide which can be found in the shells of crustaceans such as shrimp, crab and lobster.

After long experimentation and laboratory processes, this polysaccharide was turned into a substance with fat-grease-and-toxin absorbing properties, that could be utilized in different ways and in different products.

It was first used in water purification to absorb toxic substances contained in the water, but Chitosan became widely known when it was used in diet pills. Today, there are a lot of different slimming products containing chitosan, and dieters can find them in most high street stores and on several online weight-loss related websites.

Diet Pills Containing Chitosan

As it was mentioned above, Chitosan is able to absorb fat and act as a fat blocker. Just like other fat blockers it can block the absorption of part of the fats contained in our meals and help dieters consume fewer calories. What is not known is how effective Chistosan is, compared to other well-established fat blockers.

One of the most effective fat blockers on the market today is Xenical, (Orlistat), which is a prescription-only, chemical-based diet pill.

Clinical Studies on Chitosan

Most websites that sell Chitosan promote the product as a clinically proven non-prescription diet pill. The fact is that clinical studies have not really proved that Chitosan can be helpful in substantial weight loss.

One such clinical study was conducted in Auckland University with the participation of 250 adults, but did not manage to prove that Chitosan has significant weight-loss properties. However, Chitosan proved successful in reducing high cholesterol levels in the blood. The results of this clinical study were published in the International Journal of Obesity in September 2004.

There have also been several clinical studies on the effectiveness of Chitosan on animals but these studies cannot be a convincing proof of the efficacy of the product on overweight humans.

Chitosan Side Effects?

When taken according to instructions and recommended dosage, Chitosan does not seem to cause any side effects apart from mild symptoms of an upset stomach, gas and constipation. However, dieters who suffer from shellfish allergy should consult with their doctor before taking the pill.
